The Education Vault/Lacking Discipline For Nutrition And Exercise

When Discipline Fails

So you've tried to change your fitness and or nutrition.

Motivation for change comes in like a flash flood.
Whatever the reason is- We want to start working out or eating better, get more steps, etc.

Most likely we even take action and start making the changes necessary to see the results we want.

But it doesn't take long for our flood of motivation to wash away...

The changes we've made are too challenging, too inconvenient, or not producing the results we want.

"Life is a little busy right now. I'll try again in..."

This has happened to a bunch of my clients, it's happened to me, and it's probably happened to you.

"Just do it! Get hard! Be hard! Have discipline!"

(If you know who David Goggins is- This is something he or his followers would shout at a camera.)

The thing is, we've tried having discipline and it didn't work.
It's not like we wanted to fail at whatever the change we made was!

Sometimes discipline just isn't enough...

Why Discipline Fails

How many things in a day do you have to do that you don't want to do?

Even if you like your job (like me) you still probably don't want to work.

You probably don't want to wake up when the alarm goes off.
Or cook and clean throughout the day.

There's people you have to talk to that you probably don't want to talk to.

Despite that, we still do all of those things.

We have discipline.

We just use it on other things.

To use even more would be quite the feat!

If you can- that's amazing 👏🏼
But it's totally understandable if you're struggling.

What To Do When Discipline Fails

Discipline falls under the Constitution Stat- So we could improve our discipline by increasing our constitution.

But that would be like using discipline to have more discipline...
Probably not the most productive tactic.

So what other things can we do??

Well, the whole reason we're talking about discipline is because we don't have enough of it to do things we don't want to do.

Don't want to do.

That's the first thing to look at!

Why don't we want to do the thing we're supposed to do?
Can we make it so we do want to do that thing??

For the most part we're talking about fitness and nutrition changes. So let's go over how to want to make fitness and nutrition changes!

Fitness Changes:

Working out is hard and time consuming- Why in the world would we want to do that?

Well, it can be kinda fun!

It doesn't have to be boring, monotonous, or super hard.

If you don't have specific goals to train for- Working out can be anything that gets your body moving, elevates your heart rate, and improves your health!
- Walking
- Dancing
- Swimming
- Jiu-jitsu
- Larping

All of those are great options! And there's plenty more I didn't list.

I happen to enjoy lifting weights. Plus I'm a personal trainer- So that's mostly what I talk about.

BUT it doesn't have to be your form of working out. (However I will still talk about how to make it more fun)

Make Lifting Weights More Fun:

- Music: This is the biggest factor for me. I throw my headphones on, play some sick music, and basically use lifting weights as a break from jamming out.
Pro Tip: Use beat drops to start your set.
Note: I know some people who swap music for podcasts, books, or even movies.

- Friends: I just recently started working out with a friend (Because I just recently got a friend) and working out with them can definitely make it more fun. It's just a hangout session where you break up the chatter with some exercise!

- Goals + Challenges: Having goals you care about or challenges you enjoy will increase motivation to workout and make workouts more fun! (Here is a little bit on Goals + Motivation)
If you have a decent reason to workout, a goal that interests or excites you- Working out will be more enjoyable.

Nutrition Changes:

Eating better is also challenging and can be time consuming 😅

But here's the deal.
You can eat better and still enjoy your food without sacrificing too much time.

It just takes a little practice!

Here's my method for making easy, tasty meals within 30 minutes while enjoying my time.

30 Minute Big Batch:
What you need:
- Protein source
- Carb source
- 2-5 veggies

Here's how it works...

Step 1:
Prep your veggies.
Aka chop them and put them in a frying pan to start cooking.

Step 2:
Prep your carbs.
Rice, potato, pasta, etc. Prep as necessary and then start boiling it.

Step 3:
Add your protein to your veggies.

Step 4:
Stir and season as necessary.

Step 5:
Everything is done.
Assemble and eat.

This does not sound exciting.

But it does sound simple right!

And even-though it doesn't sound exciting here are a few meals that this process makes...
- Burrito Bowls
- Pasta + Meat Sauce
- Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes (Just bake veggies instead of sauté)

Plus all of these will give you more than one serving and with a high enough Intelligence Stat you can easily get your servings to be over 30 grams of protein.

Plus plus! While you make this you have a decent amount of time where your attention is not needed for cooking.
You know where you can place your attention instead?
- Netflix (or whatever streaming service)
- Podcasts
- Music (which might lead to dancing aka working out)
- Other chores that need doing
- Dogs if you have them (I highly recommend having them)

I regularly watch something on my laptop or listen to Critical Role on YouTube while I cook, making something that I don't really want to do much more fun!

And who the heck needs discipline when you can just have fun instead??
(Sort of JK- Discipline is still good to have but it's possible to get around not having it if we need to)
