I got into Dungeons and Dragons in late 2023.
One of my clients was actually leaving their job to become a full time DM and I wanted to support them- So I joined their trial campaign…
It took me about 2 months to become obsessed.
A few months in and I had created about 20 characters because it is just soooo fun!
Playing with the Character creation on DND beyond is a blast and fantasizing about how your characters will fight in certain scenarios has become my favorite way to day dream.
I was playing with two other newbies and at the start of our second campaign all of us decided to try out new characters…
When I clicked on the Triton species and read about it I just new I had to try it out!
I decided to make him a Storm Sorcerer with the plan to multi-class as a fighter. His name is Dohvnos Adelath! (I know Sorcerer + Fighter isn’t ideal but it just feels right for the character I’ve created. Storm magic with the ability to wield a deadly Trident!)
Buuut- Sorcerers are super squishy and I need to get him ready to toss around a trident with flair so let's go over his training program.
Note: He still needs time to practice his sorcery and can’t be too sore when he goes Dungeon Delving- So it’s going to be a 3 day program.
Goals:
- Strength
- Resilience (Constitution)
- Athleticism (Dexterity)
Considering he will need to be able to wield a trident, dive, duck, and dodge- I need to keep him moving really well while increasing his raw strength.
But we also can’t gas out… you never know how long you’ll be scouring a dungeon or fighting a horde of goblins. So we need to keep his resiliency high. (Luckily Triton get a plus 1 to Strength and Constitution 😉) *At least before the 2024 rules came out.
Note: A Warm-up is implied before every workout.
Day 1:
First Circuit:
- Trap Bar Deadlift: 4 x 6–8
- Alternating DB Chest Press: 4 x 16–20
Second Circuit:
- Front Foot Elevated Reverse Lunge: 3 x 8–10
- 3 Point Row: 3 x 8–12
- Half Kneeling Chops: (Inside Knee Down) 3 x 12
Day 2:
First Circuit:
- Rear Foot Elevated Split Squats: 4 x 6–8
- Seated Pulldowns: 4 x 8-10
Second Circuit:
- Alternating Lateral Lunge: 3 x 16–20
- Landmine Press: 3 x 8–12
- Low to High Chops: (Inside Leg Forward) 3 x 12
Day 3:
First Circuit:
- Landmine Clean + Press: 4 x 6–8
- Single Arm Row: 4 x 8-12
Second Circuit:
- Alternating Lunge Jumps: 3 x 20-24
- Landmine Rotations: 3 x 16-20
- Reverse Crunches: 3 x 8-10
Straight up if a Triton walked into the gym and said, "Hey Ryan, I am a super squishy sorcerer and I need to get bigger and stronger to wield a trident and wear armor."
This is what I would do!
A routine like this will help anyone get stronger without sacrificing “Dexterity”. These exercises are designed to improve mobility while being able to push some weight.
The “first circuits” are the main strength exercises and the “second circuits” are more focused on movement with rep ranges that will improve resilience.
The workouts are kinda short with only 5 exercises- But that leaves time after lifting weights to do some steady state conditioning or extra accessory work. (Like Biceps and Triceps)
If this sounds like the way you want train and or if you want to level up in real life- be sure to join the Fantasy Fitness Newsletter to start your journey!
