Okay "Infinite" might be a bit of an exaggeration and by "Power" I mean moving, feeling, and looking better.
In terms of looking better- Let's get that out of the way right now.
- Daily movement is the second best way to burn calories throughout the day (Second to just being alive).
Burning more calories throughout the day helps with body composition and thus "looking better" (In terms of being more lean)
Now let's talk about the fun stuff!
Moving and feeling better- Where true power comes from!
____
I have a condition that is really challenging at times but also very beneficial.
It's called "Not being able to sit in one place for very long".
A blessing and a curse...
Now I am joking slightly but this seriously helps me feel better.
I know I am not the only one who gets stiff and loses mobility from sitting too much.
A lot of my clients have desk jobs- most of them have poor movement capability.
But after they complete their day of working at a desk, what do a lot of them do?
- Watch TV.
- Play a game.
- Go out to dinner.
I am not saying any of these are bad things to do!
I want to relax after a day of work as well.
It's just that they all involve more sitting.
"If you don't use it you lose it."
This is a very real saying that applies to a lot of things but movement especially.
So let's go over some ways to incorporate more movement into our days.
I don't want you to think steps are the only way to get more movement in.
Yes walking is great and yes you technically get more steps by doing pretty much anything- But steps do not need to be the form of movement that you focus on.
And movement does not need to be measured in steps- It's just convenient.
Here's a list of great options to increase overall movement...
- Walking
- Exercise
- Dancing
- Mobility Drills
- Playing with a dog
- Standing and shifting your weight side to side
What we need to do is pick some of these and figure out how to add them naturally to our day.
It doesn't have to be so strict as- "I need to go for a walk everyday after lunch."
That is a great option!
But let's look at how to incorporate movement into existing habits. (Because habits are the key to success as you'll see here.)
Drink Coffee?
If you drink coffee in the morning, or have any time outside of getting ready for the day, spend some of that time on your feet! Look out your windows in quiet speculation.
Or if you brew your coffee when you wake up, don't sit around waiting for it- Perform a quick mobility routine!
Getting Ready For Anything.
This is my favorite way to add movement to my day!
If you are getting ready for anything- Play music you like to dance to!
Even if you don't actually dance you will still likely bop around a bit and it will increase your overall mood and energy for the day.
(Passionately singing in the car counts as well)
Cooking.
If you make something like an actual meal that requires multiple ingredients and time spent cooking- That means there is time where you're waiting.
Here is another great opportunity to do some mobility or some more dancing!
Watching TV.
If you watch TV at night, you are most likely sitting comfortably in a couch or chair.
Get out of that couch or chair and sit on the floor.
Do some mobility, use a foam roller, etc.
I honestly think this has some of the greatest potential to increase steps and improve movement quality.
I do this every time I watch TV, because I can't sit in one spot for more than 30 minutes- And it definitely helps decrease some hip and back stiffness I would have otherwise.
Bonus: You can also watch TV while walking on a walking pad / treadmill!
If you can find 2-3 ways to add a bit more movement to your day by doing things you already do I am certain you will notice your overall power rating increase!
(AKA you will start to look, feel, and move better.)
