The Education Vault/Consistency Beats Effort

Consistency Beats Effort

For Longterm Lasting Results

I don't track my food.

I realize that could be shocking since I recommend tracking your food so often- but hear me out.

Consistency is greater than effort.

Tracking can be tough!
And the effort required is very hard to keep up.

If it doesn't become a habit that we do automatically, then we have to go out of our way to remember to do it, and when stuff comes up...

Well you probably know what happens because it happens to all of us!

We drop the ball, we lose our momentum, and it feels like all of that effort was wasted...

But it wasn't!

It was practice.
It was educational.

Talking specifically about tracking our food- the information you get from a handful of weeks might be all you need!

My boss tracks religiously.

I do not.

One day he was asking what my calories and macros look like and I said, "I don't know the exact numbers... but I'm where I'm supposed to be."

Here's something useful to know about me.

I'm competitive and I like proving that I'm right when someone thinks I'm wrong.

So I tracked the next day and was actually shocked at how on the money I was.

If there was a letter grade associated with my accuracy- I thought I'd have about a B.
But I was pretty much right at A+!

Now this wasn't because I have a sixth sense about calories / macros in food.

Even though I don't track now- I did track for quite sometime.

I learned what I needed to about the food I typically ate.
I saw what meals got me in terms of calories and macros.
And then I just kept eating those things!

The consistency to eat what I knew worked was easier for me than the effort of tracking everything.

Consistency > Effort

Now why do I tell you this?

2 reasons...

1. To tell you that tracking isn't a forever game. It's an info gathering game.
2. That big effortful changes, the overhauls we try to do, aren't the way to get results.

I don't want to discourage effort.

If you've got it- please go ahead and give it!!

But if you're using it on something else and don't necessarily have a lot to spare on fitness / nutrition changes...

That's okay.

The effort we have will Wax and Wane over time.

I know how often I've seen Overhauls fail and leave people disappointed in their results and themselves.

Which is why I like to focus on consistency with small changes over time- For both me and my clients.

And that brings me to today's tactic...

Creating Consistency

We can all benefit from a bit more consistency in our lives.

Whether it's...

- Fitness
- Nutrition
- Or Sleep

Here's some ways you can add Consistency to what might need it.

Fitness:

- Follow a workout program

- Schedule your training sessions
These will take unnecessary thought / effort away from figuring out what to do, and when to do it, so you can save your effort for actually getting it done.

- Find a source of accountability
Accountability is the biggest game changer- In fact it's why I can't go on vacation anymore

If you can find another human to workout with (or just tell them when you're supposed to workout and ask them to check in with you)
You will 100% be more consistent!

Nutrition:

- Weigh / Measure certain foods you eat regularly to ensure the right serving size (Hello peanut butter!)

-
Create / Track 1-3 meals so you know the macros align with your goals

This will give you some space to breathe when you really want to nail your nutrition but are having a hard time devoting extra time and energy to it.

"Ugh- long day. I don't want to think of something to cook and I definitely don't want to track it... Oh yeah! I'll just make my trusty Pasta Thunder Recipe!"

This has saved me more times than I can remember!

Sleep:

- Create a "Wind Down" bedtime routine to help transition to sleep mode

- Have similar Sleep & Wake times everyday to create a stronger circadian rhythm

I always like to say, "Better sleep makes better humans."

Sleep deserves to be prioritized (If you like being a good human) and creating consistency around how you fall asleep + your sleep and wake times will help overall sleep quality.

A solid morning routine helps too!
